Internationalization (I18N)

Internationalization is a strategy of creating source language documents that renders them easy to translate and localize for foreign audiences. I18N is the abbreviation used for this long term, with “18” referring to the 18 letters left out. I18N includes such measures as creating source texts that avoid the use of difficult-to-translate idioms and jokes, for instance.
