The Ministry of Education plans to publish new, so-called national language handbooks for elementary and secondary schools. A set of studying materials for English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian language will include a textbook, exercise book, CD and teacher’s handbook. A student will use one set for three years after which time he or she should master the required level of language.
The new handbooks will differ from the books in use by containing a bilingual dictionary as well as Slovak explanation of grammar and Slovak instructions for exercises. The content will also differ by taking into account students´ “national and cultural specifics”.

The prices of courses increased compared to summer language courses, says Zuzana Palugová, regional director Skrivanek Slovensko, a teaching agency. “During summer we offer lower prices, bargain offers and reductions because there is lower demand due to holidays. As compared to last school semester, we maintained prices for some courses but we slightly increased prices of other courses due to increased costs for new premises.”

The first step towards mastering a foreign language perfectly is a faultless memory. We advise you on how to achieve this hands down.
Remember and don’t forget
You know what it’s like. You push foreign words into your heard and still you can’t remember them. You pin them up on the wall and on cupboards throughout your flat so that you can see them every day, but as soon as you put new words there, the old ones began to fade slowly from your memory. We know where the problem lies.
Before plunging into learning new vocabulary, you should perfect and exercise your memory. A good and reliable memory is a useful companion to language learning. If it doesn’t serve you as you expect it to, don’t despair. You can work on it. Your first step when learning a foreign language should therefore be to improve your memory.

People who want to perfect a foreign language pay several thousand crowns for a course in a specialised school in Slovakia. One teaching hour costs from ten to several hundred crowns.
The prices of language courses differ mainly according to their type, the region and whether the lessons are given by a local or a foreign teacher. This is the result of a ČTK survey at several language schools in Slovakia.
“English attracts the most interest, along with Spanish and northern European languages, where Norwegian is the winner, and Chinese” said Martina Reháková, coordinator of the Skrivanek language school in Bratislava. The prices of our courses depend on the region; the highest are in the capital,” she added.

Translating and interpreting agencies have been active on our market since the beginning of the 1990s. Demand for the services of professional interpreters and translators is growing. It is mainly driven by companies, as well as private entities and the state. With the entry of Slovakia in the European Union, agencies have recorded an increased interest in express translations and interpreting in particular, and have noted overall a general increase in demand for translation services. Each year, agencies translate millions of words. Requests for complex translation processing in more complicated editing programmes is the latest trend.
English and German are the dominant languages; however, with the entry of large investors, the demand for French and Italian has grown. Agencies are able to provide specialist translations and interpreting services in dozens of languages. Some are specialised in particular branches, for example translations in the field of health, technology and so on, and there are also agencies who have such a large database of translations that they can cover a wide range of specialist areas.
