Skrivanek Slovenia has become a proud partner of the international theatre festival EuroGlobe and within the framework of the festival is providing interpreting services and conference support at various events accompanying this fascinating project.
EuroGlobe offers a stage for political and cultural elaboration on Europe, building on the traditions of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, which placed exchange, creation and interaction between the audience and the performers centre stage.
The stage, with its broad range of activities, will move between the European Presidencies in Slovenia, France and the Czech Republic, building on a continuous dialogue, exchange and creation within each and between each country. A unique location in each country will be transformed into the EuroGlobe through the construction of a real Shakespearean stage in a room created by national art students. The EuroGlobe arena will be as diverse as Europe itself.
Together with theatre assemblies, youth NGOs, Shakespeare enthusiasts, politicians and many more, EuroGlobe will stage a broad programme, spanning the cultural and political arena during its ten-day programme. Creativity, debate and exchange will bring people together in the EuroGlobe to reflect about the past, present and future of Europe in anything from classical Shakespeare plays to workshops, political youth assemblies or even a Poetry Slam and Rap Music Freestyle event.

On the afternoon of April 5 employees of Skrivanek Latvia went out to Copes, a guest house in Suntazi parish, to celebrate together five successful years of doing business in Latvia.
The event started with exciting team games; the winning team arrived first at treasures, hidden at the end of a jetty.
Following a specially created script, during the evening colleagues transformed into a vividly dressed team of sea-farers – a captain, captain’s mate, navigation officer, navigation officer’s assistant, gunpowder master, inhabitants of a harbour town and other characters. A murder mystery and finding the guilty person was staged – although the crime was not solved, everything ended positively – the victim came to life, and the pirates feasted merrily until dawn broke over the sky of Vidzeme.
On 9 April of this year, five years will have passed since the Skrivanek Group opened its first branch in the Baltic region – in Riga, the capital city of Latvia.
During these five years, Skrivanek Latvia has grown rapidly, expanding the variety of services it offers and selling itself as a reliable cooperative partner to a wide range of clients in Latvia and abroad.
This would certainly be impossible without the trust of our clients, the abilities of our employees, the support from our cooperative partners and the daily tasks completed professionally and responsibly by various language specialists.
We thank you for the successful collaboration of the past and hope it will continue into the future!

A total of 107 student entries were received and judged.

International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by UNESCO's General Conference in November 1999. The International Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

The idea of devoting a whole year to languages was proposed by Austria two years ago at the 33rd UNESCO General Conference held in Paris.
To celebrate the International Year of Languages, UNESCO invited governments, United Nations organizations, civil society organizations, educational institutions, professional associations and all other stakeholders to increase their own activities to promote and protect all languages, particularly endangered languages, in all individual and collective contexts.
Skrivanek is proud to be a part of such a significant event as well. We will support and prepare many activities and events to promote this event of global importance. We are looking forward to the year 2008, which will bring many challenging opportunities.

On a summer weekend the personnel of Skrivanek Baltic branches with families met for their traditional annual summer event. This year the guests were warmly welcomed to “Ratnieki” part of Līgatne rural municipality in Latvia.
On the first day of the event everyone was enjoying the opportunity to go sightseeing and get to know the unusual monuments of Latvian nature and history: Vējiņi underground lakes and the Āraišu Lake Castle. Luckily for the guests of the employee, an ostrich farm was also visited. Ostriches are not usually seen in Latvia!.
After the excursions, the official part of the event took place in the Guest House. The best employees of the company were recognised during the evening; everybody also had the opportunity to try a festive meal. Jollity and team spirit were roused by various social/initiative games , as well as conversation by the BBQ but the amicable mood was really enriched by laughter and team spirit.

It is already the 16th time the annual Global Summit of Women, frequently referred to as the “Davos for Women” has been held. This summit brings together top female executives from business and government and this year the summit was held in the sunshine of Berlin from June 14 to 16. More than 1000 politicians, businesspersons and representatives of non-governmental organizations from 95 countries took part in the summit. The President of the Republic of Latvia Her Excellency Vaira Vike-Freiberga appeared to be one of the most prominent guests and spokeswomen at the summit during which the President was presented with the Global Women’s Leadership Award. During the summit Latvia was represented by Ms. Ina Gudele, Special Assignments Minister for Electronic Government Affairs as well as a delegation of eight female leaders in business, including Ms. Aiga Veckalne, the Area Manager of Translation Service Skrivanek Latvia. In order to discuss the future prospects and the effect of the summit the Latvian business women were given an opportunity to meet the President of Latvia.
In the lectures and workshops of the summit, successful and well-known female business leaders and government executives shared their experience about leadership, equality and the significance of diversity in a team. A wide range of topics highly important to Latvia were discussed at the summit. The topics discussed include – public private partnership, innovations, security of intellectual property, the latest developments in technology and support for small and medium enterprises.
At this summit, Skrivanek Group was represented by its General Manager Jitka Steinmetzová and Baltic Region Area Manager Aiga Veckalne.
It was 10 admirable years ago, when Pavel Skřivánek made his decision to penetrate into the Polish market and thanks to the support of diligent colleagues, the first branches were established in Poland.
During the past ten years, they managed to build a "Translation Empire" covering the whole territory of Poland and providing thousands of Polish clients with its language services. Successful projects have been completed in that period, such as implementation of a language school, development of an e-learning product and opening of an international project centre. An independent department is focused on conference organization and interpreting, and sales assistants successfully communicate with clients.
No wonder that Polish colleagues have decided to celebrate their success accordingly. At the end of May, all Polish "Skrivaneks” gathered together in a recreational centre called Serock, approximately 50 km from Warsaw, to have a weekend full of fun, teambuilding and reminiscing. It was no ordinary weekend. Friday started with a common lunch and well-deserved gifts for everybody. Using the gifts, our staff can represent the Skrivanek Company in their private life too, wearing their Skrivanek T-shirts or using the high capacity USB flash drive.
After lunch, there was time for a two-hour free discussion with “those who remember the old times” who, sitting on comfortable seats on the stage, reminisced back to the very beginnings. The current President of the Skrivanek Poland branch, Ewa Gnyp, had to be there, and from time to time she invited employees currently working for Skrivanek to contribute with a joke or curiosity from the hard pioneer stage of their activities. We heard stories which seem incredible today, how they worked from their desk, with no computers available, people were not able to work with fax machines etc. Those devoted employees have been specially awarded for their hard work and loyalty with a notebook bag.
Thereafter, the owner himself, Pavel Skřivánek, entered the scene and after his short speech full of thanks to all the staff, the full-evening party was started with a toast, followed by a great program, barbecue and drinking in the fresh air. For everyone’s entertainment, each branch prepared short amusing theatrical presentations which were witty, creative and very well performed at a professional actor’s level. The topic was – as you can guess – everyday work in a translating business. Winners were rewarded with the loudest applause and received a nice prize. The party really started to heat up – people listened to a concert, danced to music provided by a DJ and admired fire dancers at midnight.
A demanding full day of teambuilding was prepared for Saturday, with the title “Foreign Country” and the Polish “Skrivaneks” proved to be a great team. They fought like lions and fully supported each other.
In the evening, Polish colleagues launched into samba movements, dancing all night in a Hawaiian-Latin style with traditional Hawaii leis made from orchids around their necks and straw hats on their heads. There was a beach created outside, where tropical cocktails were mixed accompanied by musicians with bongos. Ladies could use the services of a beauty consultant, who gave her advice on skincare and makeup application. Courageous candidates agreed to be tattooed with henna.
On Sunday after lunch, all of them made their way home, tired but thinking of what a good job they do and how great their colleagues are.
The European Local Transport Information Service, is Europe's portal for local transport news and events, transport measures, policies and practices implemented in cities and regions across Europe. Skrivanek Hungary was asked to participate in a tender for a localization marketing campaign and succeeded amidst immense international competition.
The aim of this demanding project was the translation of internationally distributed materials from English into 18 languages - Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Turkish.
The underlying factors of our success in managing such demanding projects and delivering comprehensive language portfolios such as for ELTIS are that we can rely on the international background of Skrivanek and the skills, abilities, experience and professionalism of ourproject managers from all over the world. We also took advantage of TRADOS translation memories and TRADOS MultiTerm in achieving the highest possible cost effectiveness, quality and consistent terminology, with which the client was very happy.

Representatives of Czech towns, municipalities and enterprises have been greatly taking advantage of our presence in China. Recently, our interpreters have been translating for many delegations that are now in China developing their enterprise or business relations.
In the second half of May, for instance, the County Mayor of the Zlínský region visited the provinces of Liaoning and Shandong, and signed contracts there on mutual co-operation between these regions. We were present at this event as highly requested and respected interpreters.
We have successfully interpreted at many important business workshops where Czech entrepreneurs participated, and at many bilateral meetings between Czech and Chinese companies.
At the end of May we also interpreted for the delegation of Komerční banka at a trade fair in the city of Chengdu, where we also took part as exhibitors.
We would like to thank all of our clients and we hope that our presence in China will make business trips easier for many Czech entrepreneurs, as well as for other companies from other parts of Europe, who will surely appreciate our knowledge of Chinese culture and geography as well as our professional interpreting services.
