Visitors to Retail Park Alfa were invited to confess their love in one of four foreign languages – German, Russian, French or Italian. The Valentine’s Day event took place from 12 to 14 February and gave participants the opportunity to choose one of four different coloured stickers printed with the words “I love you!” in one of four languages. The most popular language chosen was Italian, followed by German, and finally French and Russian. Participants also took part in a prize drawing for a gift card for language lessons at Skrivanek Baltic Language School. The event was organised by Skrivanek Baltic in cooperation with Retail Park Alfa and Cinamon Cinema.
On 23 February, patrons at a Riga cafe were witnesses to a bet made between professional dancer Aleksandra Kurusova, head of the LNT (Latvian Independent Television) programme Labās ziņas (The Good News) Nora Koks, company Velves nekustamie īpašumi Chairman of the Board Andris Kreislers and singer and TV3 moderator Jānis Strapcāns. While others join reality TV shows to learn how to dance or sing, this group has decided to learn Italian; they have two months to see who can make the most progress and achieve the best results.
The idea for the bet was born a week earlier, when Skrivanek Baltic published information from a survey conducted in January at the Skrivanek Baltic Language School, during which respondents were asked questions on foreign language learning habits, popular stereotypes and which celebrities they would like to learn a foreign language from.
Aleksandra Kurusova, Nora Koks, Andris Kreislers and Jānis Strapcāns are all very different people, but they are joined by one thing – the desire to learn Italian. Aleksandra Kurusova and Nora Koks have both travelled extensively in Italy and have fallen in love with the country and its culture. In turn, Andris Kreislers has Italian business partners whom he’d like to surprise with knowledge of the Italian language, while Jānis Strapcāns wants to sing in Italian. This group will start their race at lessons taught by an Italian language teacher to see who will make the most progress and achieve the best results, at the same time mastering intermediate knowledge of the Italian language. They will attend lessons for two months at Skrivanek Baltic Language School; at the end of the two months their knowledge will be put to the test by a final exam. This gung-ho foursome bet their results on Italian cuisine. The winner will get to relax and enjoy a meal of Italian foods prepared by the other three.
