Skrivanek Baltic Staff Visit Ogre at Christmas
For the third year running, staff members of Skrivanek Baltic paid a visit to the little patients of the Children’s Clinical University Hospital Rehabilitation Centre Ogre, who were forced by their various respiratory ailments to spend the festive season in treatment and attending different daily therapies to better their health. This year, we again tried to cheer up the children and create a festive atmosphere by offering Christmas songs, games and treats. The biggest surprise for the kids was a visit by Winnie the Pooh. The bear’s dance moves and avid participation in the games truly lit up the children’s faces and brought holiday cheer.
We feel joy and satisfaction having been able to bring a festive feeling not just to ourselves but also to those who need it the most!

Let’s help Jack find a real home!
Hello, I’m Jack! My story is a strange one, but I’ll tell you what I can remember. I was wandering around the Zasulauks neighbourhood without a collar. As far as I remember, at some point I had an owner, but I don’t know where my owner went or why my collar was taken off. Then one day out of the blue, or rather, out of a blue bus, there was a girl. She started talking to me and called for me to follow her. I was pretty naive and followed her thinking she had something for me to eat. And that’s how I ended up in a kennel at the animal shelter. At first I hated it and didn’t eat anything because I wasn’t used to the food. But after a few days I started to like it here, and even the food tasted better!
I’m actually a really fun boy, at least that’s what my moms at the shelter tell me. I’m very obedient and know how to sit and shake, and even behave on a leash. Not every dog at the shelter can do that, and I’m pretty sure that learning other commands will be a cinch! When they let me run around off the leash, I never go very far and always come back—I’m scared of getting lost again.
I’m not really sure what to say about the other dogs... I’m not really interested in them and try to keep our interaction neutral, so when we’re all in a group I tend to sit off by myself. I’m much more interested in people, and I really hope someone will choose me to be their friend! My biggest wish is to find a loving owner with a house and yard I can play in, although I wouldn’t mind living in an apartment either — the most important thing is to be able to spend a lot of time together playing and training!
Come visit me at the Dzīvnieku Draugs Animal Shelter in Riga at F. Candera Street 4, or watch my video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImTtEQq1AxU

The Miracle of Christmas for the Children at the Iļģuciems prison!
The Iļģuciems prison is the only prison in Europe where female prisoners can live together with their children until the children turn four.
Every child loves its mother. Even if she’s made mistakes and has to spend every day in prison—because the most important thing for children is to spend time with their mothers. Last year, Skrivanek Baltic visited the children at the prison with a Christmas surprise and to bring then joy through games, songs and presents. This year, Skrivanek Baltic again visited the children, bringing holiday cheer—we danced with Winnie the Pooh, ate homemade treats and gathered around a potted living Christmas tree that smelled just like the forest.
There are currently seven children varying in age from a few months to two years living in the Mothers and Children ward at the prison. We wish to thank the companies SIA Adidas Baltic, SIA Vinnis and SIA Stādaudzētava Blīdene for their support in furnishing treats, clothing, footwear, the Christmas tree, toys and toiletries.
We are delighted about the joy and festive feeling we all created!

Thank You for Joining Us for the European Day of Languages Events!
The interactive event and game Try on Languages! was held on 27 September on the ground floor of the Galerija Centrs Shopping Centre.
Everyone was welcome to participate in the game, which had participants test their foreign language knowledge, learn something new in a fun and active way and even win some prizes. During the event each participant had the opportunity to go on an ”expedition” to five Galerija Centrs stores – Accessorize, Lindex, Mango, Promod and Cubus – to ”try on” their skills in speaking five foreign languages!
”Every year we hold a European Day of Languages event downtown in cooperation with the Galerija Centrs Shopping Centre. This gives a larger number of people the opportunity to participate in the European Day of Languages and to discover how exciting language games can be,” said Skrivanek Baltic Director Aiga Veckalne. ”In creating European Day of Languages events, we’ve observed that Latvians are very knowledgeable, have a great interest in foreign languages and are open to testing their skills in several interesting tasks.”
All participants in the interactive game Try on Languages! took part in a relay for the chance to win small European Day of Langauges souvenirs, as well as prizes from the participating stores. One lucky participant won the grand prize – a gift card for foreign language lessons at the Skrivanek Baltic Language School.
In cooperation with the European House in Riga, Skrivanek Baltic invited people to attend a Liv Culture Night on 29 September. Participants of the Liv Culture Night had the opportunity to learn many new things about the history of the Liv people and their language, as well as learn a few basic phrases and try their hand at making clay whistles.

We Support the Czech and Latvian Relations Exhibit
We are delighted to have the opportunity to support the Czech and Latvian Relations 1921–2011 exhibit, which is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of diplomatic relations and intercommunication between the Republic of Latvia and then Czechoslovakia (Czechoslovakia recognised Latvia de facto on 26 April 1921, but de jure on 29 December 1921), as well as the 20th anniversary of the renewal of these relations (a protocol was signed between Czechoslovakia and the three Baltic States on 9 September 1991, in Tallinn).
We invite you to come learn about the interwar period relations between the countries, which were tight economically, militarily and culturally. At the exhibit, visitors will learn many interesting facts, including that Latvia was one of the first countries with which Czechoslovakia entered into a political and trade-economic cooperation contract in 1922.
The exhibition was prepared with the support of Skrivanek Baltic and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Latvia, as well as in cooperation with several cultural institutions and with the use of media publications and private archives.
The exhibit will be open to the public at the European Union House Art Room from 9 September to 9 October.

Skivanek among the 35 largest language agencies in the world!
This year, as every year, the independent research and consultancy organisation Common Sense Advisory (CSA) has published the rankings of the top language service providers. This time the project has been expanded to include 15 new positions, which is why it rated 50 companies for the fiscal year of 2010. From a total of 25,256 companies analysed, CSA carried out a detailed assessment of 912 language agencies.
The Skřivánek language agency has once again confirmed its position as a leader on the global market. In terms of the number of its branches, it is one of the top 3 largest providers of language services. The number of people it employs makes it one of the 23 largest agencies. As regards its business results for 2010 and its overall market share, Skřivánek ranked 31st amongst the foremost language agencies around the world.
What is interesting is that the share of the 50 top language agencies in the total turnover of almost thirty billion was merely 17%. The other 24,344 language service providers make up the remaining 83% in bits and pieces, which makes this a significant yet highly fragmented section of the market.
The survey regularly seeks out the leaders on the language services market and performs a detailed appraisal based on turnover and the number of branches and employees.
Since 2006 the Skřivánek language agency has regularly defended its position in this survey of the largest language agencies. Skřivánek considers its ranking amongst the top 50 language agencies to be proof of its success in the language services field, a success which is based on the provision of high-quality and competitive services.
A complete list of the agencies ranked and detailed information about the study can be found on the Common Sense Advisory website at: http://www.commonsenseadvisory.com/

Skrivanek Baltic Participates the Strongman Run in Cinevilla 2011
The third Strongman Run took place on 4 May this year in celebration of the anniversary of the Republic of Latvia’s declaration of independence. The event was organised by the organisation Par stipru Latviju! This year’s route was 7 km long (to commemorate the Latvian riflemen) and led participants over seven hills, trenches, ramparts, tire piles, mud pits, ice-cold swims, foam pools, a fire-fighter hose bath and other obstacles.
Almost 1500 participants showed up to prove their bravery, endurance and will to help out. At the finish line many admitted this year’s run had been one of the toughest, but most interesting routes yet.
Two of our own adventurous and strong Skrivanek Baltic staff participated in the extreme run. We are especially proud of Edgars Kazradzis, who took ninth place out of almost 700 male participants.

Skrivanek Baltic Lends a Hand to the Dzīvnieku Draugs Animal Shelter
On 16 April, Skrivanek Baltic joined forces with Restaurant Galerija Istaba to organise a spring-cleaning at the Dzīvnieku Draugs Animal Shelter located at 4 F. Candera Street in Riga. The group helped clean up the animal shelter’s grounds, washed kennels, walked dogs and played with the other animals.
In addition to about 70 people participated in the spring cleaning, the donation box collected 148 lats, which will be extremely helpful in purchasing items the shelter needs, such as special milk formula for feeding kittens. Animal lovers also helped out by donating various items such as old blankets and pillows, dry food, kitty litter and leashes.
Several companies also showed their support for our furry friends – Royal Canin and Mera Dog donated food, chemical factory Sprodrība donated cleaning supplies, DGS apģērbi donated cotton blankets, sheets and clothes, support from Zooserviss, and informational support from the Riga City Council Department of Education, Culture and Sports.
At the end of the day Restaurant Galerija Istaba chef Valdis Matvejs or Ķūķis treated the hard workers to a delicious soup prepared over an open fire – because hard work builds up an appetite!
The work accomplished and the donations received during the spring cleaning are a much needed support for the Dzīvnieku Draugs Animal Shelter. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the cause by lending a helping paw!

Skrivanek Baltic Participates in International Day of Native Languages
This marks the second year that Skrivanek Baltic participated in events for the International Day of Native Languages. During the events, Skrivanek Baltic and the Latvian Language Agency invited children and adults alike to pay more attention to the varieties of language, as well as the beauty of their own native languages
Winners from across Latvia for a competition organised by the Latvian Language Agency gathered at the European Union House in Riga on 21 February. Skrivanek Baltic gave over 50 primary school and middle school students the opportunity to learn about the richness their native Latvian language has to offer, by organising the game Do You Know this Word? In the game, students had to guess provincial terms from several Latvian regions.
Participants had extensive knowledge and were able to effortlessly guess the meaning of words such as tupenis and buļba (potato), krizdoles and stiķenes (gooseberries), skotele (apron), dardedze (rainbow), ķisens (pillow), ciskadrilla (bike) and kunna (frog).
Lesser known and harder to guess were words such as žugura (stork), kušķiņi (lambs), vaiduot (to be ill), rupucs (toad), skutuls (bowl) un aizgore (behind the stove).
One of the interesting points was that, upon hearing the word used in Kurzeme for a beetle (bambel), some students thought it was the word for pear (bumbieris) or a candy, while the word kurčiks (turkey) sounded to students like a cigarette or cucumber. Sipisniks (cottage cheese) made the students think of a grasshopper, while spindzenes made some puiškāni (boys) think of a girl (merģele), and not a wasp.
At the end of the game the two most knowledgeable students were named – Santa Ķere from Ogre Primary School grade 6-b and Līva Strazdiņa from Valmiera Pārgauja Gymnasium grade 12-b. Both girls received special prizes for the event.

Skrivanek Baltic Congratulates the Best New Translator of 2010
The annual New Translator Competition finals took place on 5 January at the Skrivanek Baltic Language School. Eight students from three Latvian universities participated in the finals.
The students had to translate a text of approximately 200 words from their chosen foreign language – English, German or French – into Latvian. The other students who participated in the finals received consolation prizes and certificates of recognition.
